Spanish Fort, Alabama has broken ground on a new waterfront park called Valor Park. The two-acre park will sit between the battleship and Felix's restaurant, offering views of Mobile Bay. The park will include open green space, a scenic overlook, walking trails, a natural shoreline, a pavilion, picnic tables, and parking for over 40 vehicles.

Why it matters

The new Valor Park project will give local residents and visitors better public access to enjoy the waterfront and natural scenery along Mobile Bay. It's seen as a gateway into Spanish Fort and Baldwin County, providing a new outdoor recreation destination along the busy causeway between Baldwin County and Mobile.

The details

Construction has already begun on the Valor Park site, with crews bringing in rip rap for the natural shoreline feature. The project saw some delays due to work on the nearby Tensaw River Bridge, but city leaders say the park should be ready for use within months. A GOMESA grant of over $3 million from federal offshore oil and gas leases funded the project.

What they’re saying

“We're going to have walking trails here. There's going to be a natural shoreline as well. Safely, folks will be able to park here, fish off the shoreline if they'd like, probably more safely than sitting on the bridge as you see a lot of folks do here along the causeway. In addition, there'll be a pavilion, picnic tables so if you want to come out, have birthday parties, that kind of thing here you can do that as well.”

“It's so crucial to make sure that while we protect water quality with that money, while we do things like stopping the mud dumping in the bay, we do things to provide access to the water so more people can get close to the water, enjoy what we have to offer here in Baldwin County and this project does a lot to make that happen.”
