The Mountain Brook High School girls basketball team defeated Minor 71-51 in the opening round of the Class 6A Northeast Regional tournament, advancing to the regional final. However, the Mountain Brook boys team fell to rival Homewood 52-40 in their regional tournament game.
Why it matters
Mountain Brook's girls team is looking to return to the state final four after making it for the first time last year, while the boys team had high expectations this season after consistently being one of the top 6A teams in the state.
The details
The Lady Spartans pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure the win over Minor. Maddie Walter led all scorers with 28 points and 8 rebounds, while Kate Bakken and Avery Davis also scored in double figures. The Mountain Brook boys struggled against Homewood's defense, only scoring 9 points or fewer in the second, third and fourth quarters. Homewood's win ended Mountain Brook's two-year streak of beating them in the playoffs.
- The girls' regional opening round game was last Friday at Jacksonville State University.
- The boys' regional tournament game was the same day as the girls' game.
- The girls will now play in the regional final on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Jacksonville State.

What they’re saying
“Today, a lot of our defensive miscues in the first half and even into the second, they punished us on a lot of those different things. The better team today won; we've had their number for a good while, but at the end of the day, they're moving on and we're going home. I'm proud of my team and nine seniors, and we got some good underclassmen. That's going to be a tough one for them to swallow, but when everything settles, I think they'll be proud of their careers when they look back on it.”

What’s next
The Mountain Brook girls team will play in the regional final on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Jacksonville State University, with a chance to advance to the state final four.
The takeaway
While the Mountain Brook boys team fell short of expectations this season, the girls team continues its strong run and is one win away from returning to the state final four, showing the overall strength of the school's basketball programs.
