No. 7 Southern Miss bounced back from their first SBC loss of the season with a dominant 7-1 victory over the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Grayden Harris pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just six hits, as the Golden Eagles' bats came alive late to pull away. Junior outfielder Davis Gillespie got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the first inning, and freshman infielder Gray Eubanks added an RBI single in the ninth as part of a four-run frame that sealed the win for Southern Miss.
Why it matters
This series between two of the top teams in the Sun Belt Conference had major implications for conference tournament seeding and NCAA tournament resumes. The win evens the series for Southern Miss, who will look to clinch the series on Sunday in the rubber match.
The details
After Gillespie's early two-run shot, Arkansas State starter Jack Nelson settled in to keep the Golden Eagles off the board until the sixth inning. But Southern Miss broke through again in the sixth, with a double play allowing another run to score and make it 3-0. Harris was dominant on the mound, using his first-pitch strike approach to keep the Red Wolves off balance all game. The Golden Eagles then broke the game open with a four-run ninth inning to win 7-1.
