Lilly Hetland Olsen was born on July 6, 1925, to Norwegian immigrants Ben and Thora Hetland. She grew up on Sutton Avenue in Mobile, speaking only Norwegian until starting first grade. Lilly attended local schools, graduating from Murphy High School in 1942. During World War II, she worked as a teletype operator at Brookley Field. In 1945, Lilly and her sister Gigi performed for the Crown Prince and Princess of Norway at the Norwegian Seamen's Mission, an event covered by the Mobile Press Register. Lilly married Bernhard Olsen, a Norwegian seaman, in 1950 in Stavanger, Norway, and they settled in Mobile, where they raised their family. Lilly remained an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid Society of the Norwegian Seamen's Church for over 50 years. She was also a gifted linguist, working as a translator in Norwegian, Danish, and Spanish.
