The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has approved expanding the annual Super 7 high school football championships from a four-day event to a five-day format starting in 2026 when the games are held at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile. The AHSAA executive director and Mobile Sports Authority met earlier this week to finalize the new schedule, which will also include separate championship games for public and private schools.
Why it matters
The expansion to five days provides more scheduling flexibility and allows the AHSAA to better accommodate the growing number of championship games, including the addition of separate title contests for public and private high school football programs in Alabama.
The details
The AHSAA Central Board of Control approved the change from a four-day to five-day championship week format on Friday. Previously, the board had already voted to transition the Super 7 football championships from a traditional three-day event to four days for the 2026 and 2028 seasons when the games are held in Mobile. In 2027, the championships will return to Protective Stadium in Birmingham. The expanded five-day schedule was one of several scenarios discussed by AHSAA officials and the Mobile Sports Authority during a recent meeting.
- The five-day championship week format will begin in December 2026 when the Super 7 games are played at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile.
