The US Department of War has signed five landmark agreements with Raytheon Technologies (RTX) to dramatically increase annual production of Tomahawk cruise missiles, AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, and other key precision munitions. RTX will more than double output of these critical weapons systems to meet growing global demand.
Why it matters
The production boost aims to ensure the US and its allies maintain a decisive military edge, with the Tomahawk and AMRAAM being among the most widely deployed and battle-proven precision strike weapons. This investment in domestic manufacturing capacity comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and the need to quickly resupply munitions.
The details
Under the new agreements, RTX will increase annual production of Tomahawk missiles to over 1,000, AMRAAM missiles to at least 1,900, and Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) interceptors to more than 500. RTX will also boost production of SM-3 IIA and accelerate SM-3 IB. Many of these munitions will see their production rates double or quadruple. The company is investing heavily in capacity expansion at facilities in Arizona, Alabama, and Massachusetts to enable this surge in output.
- The Department of War signed the five framework agreements with RTX in February 2026.
- RTX plans to complete the increased production under these agreements over the next 7 years.
