Four-star quarterback Gunner Rivers, the son of eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback and NC State great Philip Rivers, has committed to play for the Wolfpack. Gunner is a four-star recruit in the Class of 2027 and is ranked as the No. 125 overall prospect and No. 10 quarterback in the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Why it matters
Gunner's commitment could be one of the most significant of NC State coach Dave Doeren's career, as the Wolfpack haven't had double-digit wins since Philip Rivers was the team's quarterback in the early 2000s. Gunner's arrival in 2027 also comes at a good time for NC State, as they will need a quarterback of the future with CJ Bailey entering his third year with the program.
The details
Gunner currently plays at St. Michael Catholic in Fairhope, Alabama, and also fielded an offer from in-state school Auburn. His high school head coach is his father, Philip Rivers, who knows well what his son will face at the next levels of competition. Philip Rivers, an NC State great, finished his college career with 13,484 passing yards and 95 touchdown passes before being drafted 4th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft. He went on to have a successful NFL career, passing for nearly 64,000 yards and 425 touchdowns.
