ZO Future Group, formerly the owner of the Birmingham City Football Club, is shifting its focus from the loss-making soccer club to the new energy vehicle (NEV) business. After offloading the Birmingham City club, ZO Future booked a HK$229.1 million net profit, but its continuing NEV operations incurred a net loss of HK$49.3 million in the first half of the fiscal year. The company's NEV business faces an uphill battle as it requires significant investment to gain traction, while ZO Future's balance sheet is fragile with only HK$43.7 million in cash at the end of December.
Why it matters
ZO Future's pivot from the Birmingham City Football Club to the NEV business highlights a common approach among Chinese companies making foreign acquisitions - take over a high-profile dud asset, rack up losses, and then shift to the next big thing. However, the company's ability to succeed in the NEV market is uncertain, as it faces financial challenges and a crowded competitive landscape.
The details
After acquiring the equity in the Birmingham City Football Club, ZO Future has now offloaded the club, with the buyer also settling 19.2 pounds million of debt owed by the team to ZO Future. This allowed ZO Future to book a HK$229.1 million net profit from the discontinuation of the business. However, the company's continuing NEV operations incurred a net loss of HK$49.3 million in the first half of the fiscal year, more than double the HK$20.4 million loss a year earlier. While revenue from the NEV business doubled to HK$56.6 million, it was only slightly larger than the company's administrative and selling expenses of HK$52 million. ZO Future also booked a HK$16.1 million loss from an equity-accounted investment.
- ZO Future acquired the equity in the Birmingham City Football Club in an earlier year.
- In 2023, a subsidiary of an investment firm founded by hedge fund manager Wagner in New York bought part of ZO Future's stake in the Birmingham City Football Club.
- In the first half of its current fiscal year, ZO Future booked a HK$229.1 million net profit from the discontinuation of the Birmingham City Football Club business.

The takeaway
ZO Future's pivot from the Birmingham City Football Club to the new energy vehicle (NEV) business highlights the challenges faced by Chinese companies making foreign acquisitions, as they often struggle to turn around high-profile dud assets and then shift to the next big thing. The company's ability to succeed in the NEV market remains uncertain, given its fragile financial position and the competitive landscape.
