Central Alabama is under a First Alert Weather Day on Sunday as off and on showers and gusty winds up to 30 mph are expected throughout the day. While severe weather is not anticipated in the area, a few thundershowers could develop this afternoon that could produce pockets of heavy rain, gusty winds, and small hail. The main impacts will be wet roads and reduced visibility at times.
Why it matters
The unsettled weather pattern could lead to minor impacts on travel and outdoor activities, though the severe threat remains south of the central Alabama region.
The details
The rain is due to an area of low pressure spinning in Mississippi, and the main line of rain is expected to move out of east Alabama by 9-10 a.m. Temperatures will be mild, with most areas seeing highs in the low-to-mid-60s. While a Marginal Risk (threat level 1 out of 5) for severe weather includes southeast Alabama and parts of central Georgia, central Alabama is not expected to see any major severe weather issues.
- The main line of rain should move out of east Alabama by 9-10 a.m.
- Thundershowers could develop this afternoon, potentially producing small hail.

What’s next
Sunshine is expected to return on Presidents' Day, with temperatures warming into the upper 60s and lower 70s. Spring-like weather is forecast for the rest of the week, with highs in the low-to-mid-70s and the potential for pollen development.
The takeaway
While the unsettled weather on Sunday may cause minor inconveniences, the severe threat remains south of central Alabama. The upcoming week is expected to bring a welcome return to spring-like temperatures and sunshine, though the risk of freezing temperatures later in the month serves as a reminder that it's still too early to start gardening.
