Where did sports holidays come from?

Sports holidays started popping up around the 1950's. National Bowling Day (Aug. 13), one of the first, was established in 1956 by the Bowling Proprietor's Association of America to draw attention to an up-and-coming sport. Surprisingly, it started a trend of holidays meant to draw attention to niche pastimes and celebrate specific groups of athletes.

But if National Bowling Day started it all, Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 4) cemented the tradition of celebrating sports. The first game was played on January 15, 1967 as part of as a planned merger between the American Football League and the National Football League. It was decided, until the merger, that the champions of each league would play each other for ultimate dominance—and the event became so popular that it became a holiday in its own right.

Now, even more niche sports have created special days to celebrate themselves. Which one is your favorite?
