The Best Water Flosser for 2023

Make flossing your teeth without the risk of bleeding your gums easy with these hygienic and efficient little machines!

water flosser

Food remnants and bacteria lingering in the mouth often have negative effects, which may be in the form of toothache, bleeding gum, or mouth odor. One must be able to wash-clean or floss the teeth after taking in food, especially after dinner knowing that the mouth will be closed for several hours before another day begins.

However, the emergence of water flossers has made teeth flossing easier and more effective, not necessarily eliminating traditional or dental flossers. Here, we’ve made a selection of the best water flossers in 2022 if you need to get one.

How We Picked

  • Intensity vs Teeth Sensitivity

Because some people may have sensitive teeth, there's every need to water floss effectively without bleeding.

  • Tip Type

There are some tips for general or everyday use, while some may be for braces, periodontics, dental works, or orthodontics.

  • Power and Strength

While traditional flossing requires little human effort to floss teeth, water flossers need to emit a good amount of pressure to be able to remove food stuck in between the teeth.

  • Cost-Effectiveness

Considering your budget is inevitable and paramount as much as water flossers do a great job. However, a cheap and affordable model should do the job too.

Who This Is For

Who this is for
If you want to get rid of traditional or dental flossers, probably because of frequent bleeding of the gum during the process due to the sensitivity of your teeth, then you should consider making use of water flossers.

Are water flossers worth it?
With water flossers, you can clean your teeth without restrictions as you can reach every corner of your teeth without causing any bleeding, unlike dental flossers. Cleaning braces with water flossers is very possible and easier, but bulkier and pricier when compared to traditional flossers. Also, there’s a need for regular maintenance to keep your equipment working in good condition.

Electronic water flosser vs Manual Flossing
Electronic water flossers help in eliminating or reducing gum bleeding while cleaning, though some people may bleed at their initial use, but get better subsequently. If your teeth are braced, you don’t have to remove the braces before you floss. Also, they save time and are very fun to use, but costlier than manual or dental flossers.

With manual flossers, there’s every tendency to experience bleeding gum if your teeth are very sensitive. These flossers are designed with strings that remove food stuck in between the teeth but may cause minor injuries if not carefully used. However, they are portable and less expensive compared to water flossers.

Are water flossers good for braces/gum disease?
Water flossers are indeed perfect for braces and gum diseases. There are a wide variety of flossing options to solve a particular problem with the teeth/gum. Some models have a massage option, which emits pulses of water for effective cleaning without causing bleeding gum.

Water flossers are indeed perfect for braces and gum diseases. There are a wide variety of flossing options to solve a particular problem with the teeth/gum. Some models have a massage option, which emits pulses of water for effective cleaning without causing bleeding gum.

Why You Should Trust Us

We have oftentimes gotten complaints from traditional or dental flosser users regarding bleeding gum while flossing. We even went as far as searching the web to see if we could get the same complaints, yet we did.

However, we waited no longer to get more customer feedback or complaints, then we sorted for possible solutions. We tried a wide variety of dental flossers to see if anyone would solve the common problem, yet we found none. We proceeded in our research thoroughly and we found out that water flossers are the best substitute for dental flossers irrespective of their cost and size. We also tracked dentists and specialists in dental care to adhere to their medical advice and recommendations.

Moreover, the knowledge of water flossers isn’t enough, so we went further with research in getting other models/brands that will fit different flossing purposes and levels of efficiency. Therefore, from our “Best Pick” down to “Almost Made The Cut Out”, you can make a reasonable choice.

How We Picked

Intensity vs Teeth Sensitivity
Food remnants and other particles in the mouth and in between teeth can only be removed if the water flossers emit water with a certain amount of pressure. A good water flosser should have three, six, or ten pressure settings to fit a wide range of teeth sensitivity. In comparison with a manual brush, it has to be very effective to remove plaques from tooth surfaces.

Although water flossers are good for sensitive teeth and gum, it is very important to avoid models with higher-pressure settings which could lead to bleeding if used. Water flossers with lower pressure settings can still remove food stuck and other particles from the teeth efficiently without necessarily having to use high pressure.

However, having a water flosser where you can comfortably adjust its pressure or multiple pressure settings is something we couldn’t ignore. “If you are a first-time water flosser, it is best to start at a low-pressure setting and gradually work your way up,” advises Dr. Bertman.

Tip Type
It may not be easy getting a water flosser for every member of the family, considering the cost. Meanwhile, some tips may not be required for particular flossing because of the water pressure outlet. Some tips are for general or everyday use, while others could be for braces, orthodontics, dental works, implants, fixed implant bridges and dentures, periodontal pockets, or fresh breath. Tip types for all these purposes can be detached, maintained, and replaced.
Note: Not all tips are compatible with all water flossers.

Power/Strength
Traditional flossers are capable of removing plaques on teeth surfaces and other particles in the mouth as water flossers do, but traditional flossers do not eradicate bleeding gum. Dental/traditional is still recommended by dentists because they remove plaques from teeth effectively by the application of human strength, so for water flossers to be a perfect merge, they must have a certain strength and power to emit water with pressure. Again, a good water flosser should have three, six, or ten pressure settings ranging from 10-90 or 10-100 PSI for it to be able to remove 99.9% of plaque on teeth surfaces.

Price vs Quality
Water flossers, generally, are more expensive than dental flossers because of their technical features. However, the price and quality of water flossers are factors to be considered reasonably to make a better choice.

Water flossers with higher prices tend to be more effective and intensive than those with lower prices. They have more features such as pressure settings and added tips. On average, you may spend up to $10 per year using a dental or traditional flosser. But if you want to make use of water flossers, you should budget above $20 for a good model without regrets.
The quality of a water flosser should be considered too before buying one. Oftentimes, price plays a big role in the determination of a water flosser’s quality. Getting a quality water flosser depends on your budget as a high-cost model and a low-cost one are arguably comparable considering their available features.

Style
Having a water flosser with multiple flossing options and features is greatly recommended for multiple users or family use such as pressure settings and tips. For instance, If your teeth are sensitive enough or braced then your water flosser should proceed with attachment tips for proper emission of water to ensure effective flossing. Also, brands with multiple flossing pressure settings are recommended for sensitive teeth, braces, and existing dental works to reduce bleeding and track the progress of your gum. Other styles of water flossers include corded; featuring a cord for transporting water from the reservoir to the mouth and taking up more counter space. While cordless models are handheld and portable and do not take up counter space.

Charging capabilities
Cordless water flossers feature batteries that need to be recharged when they are run down and replaced when weak. Most cordless models take up to 3-4 hours for batteries to completely recharge, but take up to 24 hours to recharge when they run down completely. A water flosser with a good battery capacity takes up to 7 days to run down if used properly.

Care and Maintenance

How to clean your water flosser
Firstly, unplug the unit and clean the whole (external) body with a soft cloth mixed with liquid soap. Remove the reservoir from the unit and run it in a dishwasher and allow it to air dry, while the valve is removed. Clean the valve by massaging your finger within with warm running water and reattach it to the reservoir when both are properly dry. Next, mix about 16 ounces of warm water with about four tablespoons of vinegar and pour the solution into the reservoir. Run the flosser till all the solution runs out to disinfect the reservoir and the tip. Rinse the entire flosser thoroughly by running it in warm water so that the vinegar is no more. Finally, clean the handle and soak the tips differently in vinegar for about seven minutes and rinse with warm water. Make sure every component of the flosser is dry before assembling them.

How often to clean your water flosser
To keep your water flosser in good working condition and avoid transmission of infection to your mouth, you should clean it at least once a week and replace the tip every three to six months.

Do not share your water flosser with other people
Health-wise, it is not advisable to share your equipment with other people irrespective of your relationship with them. Because water flossers use tips as water outlets, there is every tendency that any disease or infection of the mouth can be transmitted without proper sanitation.

Using saltwater on your water flosser
Though warm water is recommended for flossing, salt water is also a good choice. Salt water helps to disinfect the bacteria in the gums and removes plaques on the teeth effectively. Using saltwater on your water flosser does not instantly result in any chemical effects, rather disinfects it. To avoid any negative effects in the future, maintain a proper cleaning culture for your water flosser.
