Zorro spent his days in a rural field — crusty scabs covering his skin and nearly no fur for protection. Dexter lived on the streets while sporting matted, messy dreadlocks so long he could barely see. And Arlo, saddled with painful fur mats, wandered alongside a lonely country highway until rescuers took him to a local shelter.
Fortunately, their “dog days” have given way to much happier times during this National Spoil Your Dog Day.
Groomed for a better life
Along with thousands of other dogs, they’ve received love, food, care — and equally important — a much deserved doggie makeover. Wahl, a company specializing in animal grooming products, has once again teamed with GreaterGood.org to sponsor the eighth annual Dirty Dog Contest. The event donates money and grooming supplies to shelters across America so these loving (future) pets can take a giant step toward adoption.
“Millions of dogs enter shelters every year, and the unfortunate reality is that less than half are getting the grooming they so desperately need,” says Wahl VP Steven Yde. “These deserving animals are being perceived as ‘damaged goods’ just because of their appearance. “It’s our hope these makeover images and stories will inspire people to either adopt a dog in need or reach out to local shelters to see how they can help.”

Together, Wahl and GreaterGood.org have selected 10 finalists to participate in the contest, with your votes determining the top three winners. Cash grants go to the animal shelters and rescue groups affiliated with the dogs getting the most votes. Even better, the site allows visitors to search for local adoptable dogs.
Voting continues through August 19.
Wahl’s pet shampoo donations have helped rescues and shelters nationwide transform more than 130,000 dogs since 2012. The company will donate a bottle of shampoo to a shelter in need — with each one you purchase — when you use the code BUY1GIVE1 throughout August.
