Hey Alexa, clear my schedule. There’s shopping to do. Amazon Prime Day began at midnight PDT on Monday — and continues through 11:59pm PDT Tuesday. That’s 12 hours longer than last year — making this the most extensive Prime Day ever. It’s a clear sign that Amazon has succeeded in turning this five-year-old mid-July mega sale into a summertime Black Friday.
Look for discounts on a massive amount of items including Fire TVs, Echo devices and Instant Pots. Savings will extend to all of Amazon’s many departments. Expect to cash in on Whole Foods Prime Day deals too. (Amazon acquired the boutique grocery chain two years ago.)
The biggest Prime Day discounts will apply to Amazon’s own products and brands, including the full range of Echo speakers, Fire tablets, Fire TV streamers and Kindle readers. Amazon has promised the biggest Prime Day deals ever on Alexa-enabled devices. For example, check out the Echo Dot — now listed at $22 — its lowest price ever!
How to save
You must be a Prime member to take part, and Amazon does offer a free trial membership when you first sign up. After that you can stay on board for $119 per year (or $12.99 per month) or cancel it within 30 days. Either way, you’re still set for Prime Day. Note: Prime Student Members are fully eligible as well. Yet another perk of a college education.
Also, note that only Amazon Prime customers will be able to access Lightning Deals. Those are the discount items featuring mind-boggling low prices on major brands. Jump on these deals quickly because once the word is out, supplies sell out fast. Check them out consistently. It’s the best way to stay on top of your game to reap the deepest discounts. After browsing the site and finding your deal, add it to the cart and make your purchase before the timer runs out. If you change your mind and delete that deal from the cart, you can’t re-select it.
Now that Amazon Prime Day is not one, but two days; you’ll want to prepare. Here are some tips:
- Do your homework. If you want the best deals, scope out prices on Amazon (and elsewhere) early. Then, make sure your budget aligns with your expectations when you shop on Prime Day.
- Do keep your wish list specific. Browse with the exact makes and models of the objects you’re looking for. Save time and shop efficiently, focusing on the best deals.
- Don’t wait until the last minute to shop. If possible, start stalking Amazon NOW since deals have already started.
- Don’t delay! Sign up for a free 30-day Amazon Prime membership in time for Prime Day.
- Oh, and Happy Shopping!
Amazon’s not alone
Although Prime Day is the major attraction in July, Target has responded with Deal Days. Like Prime Day, Deal Days takes place on July 15 and July 16 with slashed prices on” hundreds of thousands of items — while offering the best options for delivery and pick-up, including same-day,” according to Target. There’s no membership requirement for Target customers on Deal Days but there is a $35 minimum charge before your order qualifies for free delivery.
Deal Days include brick and mortar Target stores as well as online inventory. If you go to a Target store to pick up an item you ordered online, there’s another Deal Days benefit — just drive up to a window and a Target employee will load your item in the car for you. Pick up more savings with the Target app and an additional 5% price cut if you use your REDcard.
