Team managers are a sports organization’s unsung heroes. They ensure all of a sports team‘s off-the-field needs are met to allow the athletes and the coaches to keep their heads in the game. November 6 was officially dubbed National Team Manager Day by the team funding app earlier this month.
To celebrate the team funding app is calling on amateur and scholastic sports teams across the U.S. and Canada to for its “Team Manager of the Year” Award for a chance to win one of three $1,000 prizes. Nominations are open through November 30, 2019.
Additionally, FlipGive is helping inspire North Americans to enter the contest by showcasing some the behind-the-scenes wizardry team managers execute everyday to help keep a team successful throughout the entire season.
Here are 5 things team managers do that make them worthy of earning the coveted title of “Team Manager of the Year” from FlipGive.
1. ARRIVE EARLY AND STAY LATE TO MAKE SURE THE TEAM HAS EVERYTHING THEY NEED
Practices may be grueling for athletes and game day may be filled with nervous energy, but none of that would matter if team managers didn’t show up hours before practices or games to make sure the playing field is set up to often exacting specifications. Then, they have to break it all down again once the team leaves the field.
2. KEEP TEAM EQUIPMENT IN TIP TOP SHAPE
Someone’s gotta wash all those muddy jerseys and make sure the balls are all inflated properly. That’s the job of a team manager. The support staff to end all support staff.
3. SCHEDULING OUT-OF-TOWN TRAVEL LOGISTICS
This pertains mostly to scholastic and travel recreational teams. The task often falls to the team managers to book travel and hospitality accommodations for road games. If you’ve ever booked a vacation for yourself you know how time consuming and difficult it can be. Now imagine doing it for dozens of people multiple times a season. Team managers really do deserve your respect.
It’s hard to afford all that travel, not to mention field fees, jerseys, equipment, etc. if the team doesn’t have enough funds. Team managers tend to be the spearheads in the fundraising department, an often difficult and thankless task. Luckily, this is where FlipGive comes in clutch. Their service makes it much easier for teams to raise the funds they need to stay afloat (there love for team managers is pretty noble as well)!
5. KEEPING EVERYONE INFORMED AND USING THE SAME PLAYBOOK (OFF THE FIELD)
When it comes to the logistics of managing a team, great communication is vital. Team managers liaison between coaches, players, and often, parents, to keep everyone aware of the game and practice schedules, when to arrive, and what color jersey to wear, among other things.
These are just a few of the ways team managers are an integral part of any sport organization, and just a few of the reasons they deserver to be the All Star every November 6.
To show your appreciation for the team manager in your life, before the deadline on November 30, 2019.
