National Twin Day – December 18, 2024

This special day was usually celebrated on the first weekend of August each year, but in 2019, it was proclaimed that National Twin Day was to be observed on December 18. Mythology has told us a lot about the unique set. Remember Esau and Jacob? They were the first twins recorded in the Bible. Both literature and modern-day sitcoms always keep us in tears and total amazement when twins are portrayed. Over the years, we have been fascinated whenever we see twins among us, whether as babies, teenagers, or adults, fraternal or identical twins. National Twin Day is a day set aside to celebrate the unique connection between these siblings who share the same birthdays, whether twins, triplets, quads, or more — they’re all welcome.

History of National Twin Day

Moses and Aaron Wilcox are the pair of twins who inspired National Twin Day. In 1819, they donated six acres of land to a town, Millville. In exchange, the town changed its name to Twinsburg.

In 1976, Twinsburg hosted the first twin festival in honor of the Wilcox twins. In that year, only 36 twins were in attendance. Without being discouraged, the town was determined to make the second twin festival happen. It was their determination towards making the second festival happen that birthed National Twin Day. To date, Twinsburg remains the epicenter of National Twin Day.

So far, 43 festivals have taken place, and over 77,000 sets of twins and multiples have been in attendance. National Twin Day Festival is recorded as the largest annual gathering of twins in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The festival has had many beautiful themes. In 1992, the theme was “Twinsburg’s 175th Anniversary.” 1994 had “International Year of Family. In 1999, it was “Two-of-a-kind. In 2001, it was “Double Fun,” and in 2020, it was “The Roaring TWINties.” Punny!

Although it has grown to become globally accepted, National Twin Day was not always this popular. The first time Twin Day was proposed to the city council, it was rejected. Since becoming embraced and almost a part of modern-day culture, It now boasts of being the largest annual gathering of twins globally and draws thousands of participants from all over the United States and elsewhere in the world, celebrating the unique gift to humanity called twins.
