National Sabrina Day – September 6, 2024

National Sabrina Day is celebrated on September 6 every year. It’s a traditionally female name with Celtic, English, Latin, and Italian roots. It’s thought to have represented someone from Cyprus or the River Severn region. It could mean “legendary princess” or “from the border.” The name Sabrina was also the name of an illegitimate daughter of the Welsh king Locrine in Celtic mythology.

The king’s wife, Gwendolen, ordered the child to be drowned, thereby giving her name to the river where the horrible act occurred. The river’s name was Sabrina in Latin literature, although it is currently known as the Severn.

History of National Sabrina Day

Sabrina is a feminine given name derived from the Roman name for the Severn, a river in mid-Wales that runs into England. According to a narrative told by Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 1100s, Sabrina, the Latinized form of the river’s proto-Welsh name, was the daughter of a king named Locrinus and his mistress, the Germanic princess Estrildis.

Following the father’s death, Brutus of Troy, the reputed second founder of Britain, Locrinus, ruled England. Locrinus ignored his wife Gwendolen and their son Maddan in favor of Sabrina and her mother. Still, Gwendolen became outraged and organized an army against him, ultimately defeating Locrinus in battle. Sabrina and her mother were then commanded to be drowned by Gwendolen.

So that Locrine’s betrayal of Gwendolen would not be forgotten, the river was named after her. According to folklore, Sabrina resides inside the river, which mirrors her mood. Dolphins and salmon swim alongside her as she rides in a chariot. According to the latter version, Sabrina’s legend may have become entangled with previous tales of a river deity or nymph.

Following the premiere of the film Sabrina in 1954, the name gained popularity among English-speaking people, and it became one of the most popular names for girls born in the United States. Famous bearers include American actress Sabrina Bartlett and American singer, songwriter, and actress Sabrina Carpenter.

Sabrina is a popular name among Indians and Pakistanis, as ‘sab’ implies ‘everything’ in Hindi and Punjabi. Sabreena/Sabrina and Sabreen/Sabrin, the masculine variations, are both Arabic names that are related to the Arabic word ‘sabr,’ which means ‘patience.’
