Get ready to propose—it's the national month of love! Well, it's a month named after the goddess of marriage, anyway. June gets its name from Juno—she was an ancient Roman goddess who not only presided over marriage, but was married herself. Her companion was none other than Jupiter, the head honcho of all the gods and goddesses in the world (not too shabby)! If you're not ready to settle down quite yet, that's okay—there are national days in June that require a bit less of a commitment. (And depending on your mindset, our June holidays might even be significantly more fun!)
Is your June calendar at the ready? Mark down some of our favorite holidays you won't want to miss.
RELATIONSHIP HOLIDAYS: Your best friend is one of the most important people in your life—she's almost family. That's why there's a June holiday—National Best Friend's Day (June 8)—to celebrate your love. Non-platonic love also gets its day in the sun this June with National Kissing Day (June 24).
FAMILY HOLIDAYS: One of the holidays in June commemorates a very important person in all of our lives. Can you guess who it is? (Hint: he tells bad jokes.) That's right, it's Father's Day (this year it's on June 18). There's also a June holiday for the overall parental unit—Global Day of Parents (June 1).
CAUSE HOLIDAYS: Did you know that 1% of the world's population is displaced from their homes? That's why World Refugee Day (June 20) is so important. There are also national days in June for National Loving Day (June 12) and World Oceans Day (June 8).
FOOD HOLIDAYS: Holey Swiss—cheese was actually a mistake, born from an ancient merchant who left milk in his pouch on an afternoon day. No matter how it was invented, we celebrate National Cheese Day on June 4. We also celebrate another one of America's favorite foods on International Sushi Day (June 18), and one of its favorite desserts on National Donut Day (June 2).
