It's March, the time where we celebrate the New Year! Well, at least we would if we lived in Ancient Rome—where it was the first month of the year. March is named after Mars, the god of war. Naturally, he was a pretty demanding overlord, so many of the ancient holidays in March were festivals and athletic events celebrating him.
Even though there might not be any javelin or shot put holidays on the March calendar anymore, there are plenty of other fun national days in March to celebrate! Mark down some of these standouts:
FOOD: Did you know the Oreo was invented in 1912—and it's been America's best-selling cookie ever since? That's why we celebrate National Oreo Day (March 6)!
DRINK: There are also March holidays for some of America's other staples, namely National Pancake Day (March 7), International Waffle Day (March 25), and National Potato Chip Day (March 14).
PET HOLIDAYS: Sorry Mars, our March calendar is laying the cat/dog feud to rest for one month. There are national days for both the cat and dog lovers in our lives—on March 28, we show our cats a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T for Respect Your Cat Day, and on the 23rd we celebrate National Puppy Day!
RELATIONSHIPS: The promposal has only been around since 2001, but we only started celebrating it in 2016. That means there's a lot of catching up to do! Celebrate National Promposal Day on March 11. If you're ready to get engaged for real—never fear, there's a March holiday for you too with National Proposal Day (March 20).
CAUSES: 27+ countries will come together to celebrate one of the most important holidays in March: observed since the 1990's, it's International Women's Day (March 8)! We also celebrate Red Nose Day (March 24) and National Read Across America Day (March 2).
